Annaghdown immigrants to New Zealand, as represented in the writings of Dan Davin

Our next talk will be held on Wednesday 29 May at 8pm in the Heritage Room. Dr John Cunningham, Discipline of History, NUI Galway, will speak on ‘Annaghdown immigrants to New Zealand, as represented in the writings of Dan Davin’. All are welcome to this free event.

Significant numbers from the Annaghdown area emigrated to New Zealand in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many settled in and around Invercargill in the far south of South Island. The distinguished writer Dan Davin (1913-1990), son of Tonegurrane-born Patrick Davin, grew up there, and in his fictional writings he represented everyday life in what he described as ‘Southland’s transplanted Galway’. The presentation will discuss emigration from the area to New Zealand, and examine the immigrant experience as it was seen by Dan Davin.
